List of historical states in Ghana

The list of historical states in Ghana includes the most important known state entities that existed in pre-colonial times on the territory of present-day Ghana . Before the arrival of the Europeans, hundreds of chiefdoms and kingdoms may have existed in this area. A map of the Gold Coast from 1629 lists 43 different "empires" for the southernmost half of the country alone. and the 1st Fanti Confederation of the 18th century comprised 21 "states" of the Fanti .

The list is roughly sorted according to linguistic and cultural criteria:
