This is a list of Russian abbreviations for place names in the order of the Cyrillic alphabet . It is based on Russian usage. The transcription of Cyrillic characters is always based on the rules given in the article Cyrillic Alphabet , namely those of the German transcription (in contrast to the scientific transliteration , which is not used in Wikipedia). Some of the names come from the time of the Soviet Union . The following list does not claim to be up-to-date or complete.
