The list of South African chess players contains chess players who are or were eligible to play for the South African Chess Federation and who meet at least one of the following conditions:
- Winner of one of the following FIDE titles: Grand Master , Honorary Grand Master , International Master , Grand Master of Women , Honorary Grand Master of Women, International Master of Women;
- Holder of one of the following ICCF titles: Grand Master, Honored International Master, International Master, Grand Master of Women, International Master of Women;
- Winning a national individual championship.

- ↑ Wolfgang Heidenfeld later played for the Irish Chess Federation.
- ↑ Watu Kobese played for the German Chess Federation from 1989 to 1995 .
- ↑ Anzel Laubscher was called Anzel Solomons between 2006 and 2015.
- ↑ Marany Meyer has been playing for the New Zealand Chess Federation since 2009 and is now called Marany Flack, but continues to play under her maiden name Meyer.
