List of renamed streets in Pretoria

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This list contains the list of renamed streets in the South African city of Pretoria ( City of Tshwane ). The name changes were made in accordance with the provisions of the South African Geographical Names Council Act ( No. 118/1998 ) and its subsequent changes.

The name changes relate to street names after predominantly historically significant people. According to a spokesman for the city administration, the new street names were given to commemorate the merits of people in the anti- apartheid movement, the struggle for equality and for cultural achievements. The subject was and is very controversial. The lobby group AfriForum filed a lawsuit with the North Gauteng High Court for the renaming and achieved success through the judge's verdict on April 19, 2013. The administration of the City of Tshwane refused the judicial order and the renaming to be carried out within 60 days. AfriForum then proposed dual road signage . Kgosientsho Ramokgopa , the mayor of Tshwane, denied the alleged hostility of his administration towards Afrikaners and pointed to the predominant number of street names with a Boer background. The case came before the Supreme Court of Appeal in Bloemfontein .
