The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality is a metropolitan municipality in the South African province of Gauteng . It was formed on December 5, 2000 from 13 independent cities and municipalities. In 2016, Tshwane had 3,275,152 inhabitants in 1,136,877 households.

In 2011 the metropolitan municipality had 2,921,488 inhabitants. 75.4% of them were black, 20.1% white, 2% colored and 1.8% Indian or Asian .
19.4% of the first language was Sepedi , 18.4% Afrikaans, 14.7% Setswana , 8.4% each English and Xitsonga , 8.3% isiZulu , 5.6% isiNdebele , 5, 1% Sesotho , 2.3% Tshivenda , 2.1% isiXhosa , 1.5% Siswati and 3% another.

In the 2016 national municipal elections , the Democratic Alliance (DA) won 93 of the 214 seats in the metropolitan area, the African National Congress (ANC) 89 and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) 25 seats. Seven seats went to smaller parties. The EFF MPs supported the election of Solly Msimanga (DA), so that he was elected Mayor . After Solly Msimanga announced his candidacy as prime minister for Gauteng Province during the 2019 parliamentary elections and his resignation as mayor on February 11, 2019, Stevens Mokgalapa (also DA) was elected as his successor on February 12, 2019.

The largest train station is Pretoria Station . The local transport systems Metrorail Gauteng and Gautrain serve numerous other stations in Tshwane.
Airports
The OR Tambo International Airport in the metropolitan municipality of Ekurhuleni is easily accessible from Tshwane. At Wonderboom Airport in the north of Tshwane, only smaller planes can be handled. The Swartkop and Waterkloof military airfields are also located in the Tshwane area .
