The Wonderboom Airport ( IATA code PRY , ICAO code FAWB ) is an airport in the north of Pretoria in South Africa's Gauteng province . The airport is located in the Metropolitan Municipality City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality .
history
The airport was built in 1937. The military took over the airport during World War II . In 1945 the airport was placed under civil administration again. In 1960 a new terminal building, hangars and workshops were built. The runway was also extended and landing lights were installed. Due to the expansion measures, the airport was well equipped for the handling of the first Boeing 737 in 1982. In 1993 the runway was renewed and extended to 1,828 m so that larger aircraft can take off and land.

Airlink suspended flights to and from Cape Town in May 2018 .
Incidents
- July 10, 2018 - A Convair CV-340 from Rovos Air ( aircraft registration ZS-BRV ) crashed after taking off from Pretoria Wonderboom airport during a test flight 6 km from the airport after problems with the left engine. There were 20 aircraft occupants on board, including 3 crew members. One crew member was killed and four people seriously injured; the plane was destroyed. The aircraft had been painted in the historic colors of Martin's Air Charter and was to be transferred to the Aviodrome Aircraft Museum in Lelystad, Netherlands.
