Les Monthairons Castle, historicist building from the 19th century based on the "manoir type"

This list includes castles, chateaus and fortresses in the former French region of Lorraine .

overview

While the ruins of the Hohenstaufen castle shape the landscape in neighboring Alsace , Lorraine is home to numerous castles . Medieval , Lorraine castle ruins are particularly found on the eastern slopes of the Vosges ; even if less densely than in Alsace, at least in a similar form. The further west and south, the more “French” the systems become. The Hohenstaufen type, sometimes even with humpback blocks , can still be found in isolated cases far beyond the former language border, for example at Preny Castle or the clock tower of the Castle of Bar-le-Duc . Otherwise the late Gothic moated castle of the fort castle type prevails . Some hilltop castles also correspond to this type, examples of which can be found in Moyen and Nomeny, among others.

Most of the castles were built before the Thirty Years' War at the end of the 16th and beginning of the 17th century and often belong to the "manoir type" (rectangular residential building with corner towers) derived from the fort type. Smaller country castles are so dense in some areas - especially in the departments of Meurthe-et-Moselle and Moselle - that almost every second town has a castle or at least a manor house - a “trip into the blue” can lead to some discoveries, but not by a long shot all castles are recorded in maps or literature. Therefore, this list cannot be considered nearly complete.

After the Thirty Years' War, construction activity slowed down significantly, with outstanding exceptions being the castles of Lunéville , Commercy and Haroué . In the 19th and early 20th centuries, some historicist castle buildings were built, mostly based on the "manoir type" of the 17th century.
