The Lithuanian-Polish-Ukrainian Brigade is a planned but not yet operational brigade that has not yet been deployed , in particular due to the politics of Ukraine and the skepticism of Russia . The interweaving of the two NATO states with a non-NATO state is also viewed as problematic , since in the event of an attack on a non-NATO state the other states could also be involved and NATO's assistance clause would apply.

history

On June 14, 2009 - during a meeting of EU defense ministers - the establishment of the brigade was agreed. On November 16, 2009 it was agreed that the brigade should be ready and operational in 2011. In 2011 this date was postponed to 2013.

On March 17, 2014, at the intention of the Polish minister and against the background of the Crimean crisis , preparations were reactivated. The Polish defense minister 's aim was to bind Ukraine more closely to the Western powers. The brigade should be operational in a few years at the latest.

At the beginning of February 2015, the Ukrainian parliament confirmed the agreement concluded in January.

In October 2017 it was announced that the brigade would be named Kostjantin Ostrogski .

organization

The 4500-strong force is to have its headquarters in Lublin and serve as a reserve for international operations by NATO and the European Union .

On November 26, 2014, it became known that long-term military cooperation between the three countries due to the Ukraine crisis was being sought and that arms deliveries were also possible. An extended arm of arms deliveries via the NATO country Lithuania was excluded, "only our own stocks will be delivered to Ukraine".
