LitLink is a non-commercial reference management program for Windows and Mac OS. It is based on a FileMaker Pro database. The program is aimed primarily at humanities scholars and describes itself as a knowledge management program for historical and cultural studies .

LitLink is funded by the Universities of Zurich and Basel as well as various other institutes and is available as a free download for Windows and Mac OS. The specialty of the program lies in the relational linking of all information - in LitLink each author is only recorded once, then his works are assigned to him. Any links between objects are also possible within the database, for example to show the influences of authors or works on one another. This makes the program particularly suitable for biographical work and for larger research projects that involve recognizing connections within the material viewed.

Functions

  • LitLink captures authors, books, periodicals, articles, archival materials, images and films.
  • Any number of index cards can be created for each of these objects.
  • Objects can be assigned to events and locations.
  • Any number of output formats, so-called citation forms , can be defined by the user to create directories, literature lists, etc.
  • With the also free Firefox extension XMLdump , LitLink can directly import data from numerous library catalogs.
  • From version 3 you can use the built-in web viewer to query libraries directly in the application. Automated queries can be created and edited by the user in order to e.g. For example, you can search for the current author in a specific library with a mouse click.
  • In order to make connections between recorded data visible, LitLink automatically lists objects similar to each object . For this purpose, the keywords entered by the user are analyzed. In addition, as of version 3, any objects can be linked to one another, for example to show relationships between authors.

With version 3.5. A new project management has been integrated: It now allows structuring into chapters and sub-chapters as well as the free movement of individual entries, but also entire sub-structures. Together with the extended "Create directory" function, it is possible to pre-structure publications completely in Litlink and then to put all citations, comments and references including chapter headings on the clipboard with one click. From version 4.0 a free web service is available with which users can synchronize their local data. This means that you can work with your own data in the archive even where your own laptop cannot be used. In addition, an English and French interface is now also available. Users can selectively release the content of their own projects in order to give other Litlink users access to parts of their data. Access can either be granted completely or restricted to the bibliographic data.

Interfaces

LitLink can import data in BibTeX and Endnote formats . Since version 4.5, LitLink can directly read the library of a Zotero account and convert the publications recorded with Zotero into its own relational data format.
