The Little Pend Oreille National Wildlife Refuge a is a nature reserve ( English wildlife preserve ) that is part of the National Wildlife Refuges managed by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service . The sanctuary is located east of Colville, Washington , the nearest town, on the western slopes of the Selkirk Mountains . It is mainly in eastern Stevens County , but with a smaller part also in Pend Oreille County to the west of it . The reserve is the only mixed montane conifer forest area in the United States outside of Alaska and the largest in Washington .

Among the animal species in the area include numerous species of songbirds, bald eagles , elk , black bear , Mackenzie wolves , cougars , moose , beaver and white-tailed deer .

Uses are hunting, fishing, hiking, camping and horse riding.
