history

John Work, an agent for the Hudson's Bay Company , founded Fort Colvile near the fur trading post at Kettle Falls in 1825 . It replaced Spokane House and the Flathead Post as main trading centers on the upper Columbia River.

Americans also sought settlement and economic opportunities in this territory. In the first half of the 19th century, the Oregon Boundary Dispute (or the Oregon Question) arose as a result of the rival British and US Americans in the Pacific Northwest. It was settled by the Oregon Compromise of 1846, which set the new border between Canada and the USA at the 49th parallel and thus north of Fort Colville. The post remained for some time a center of mining and transportation or supplies for the gold rush activities of the 1850s and 1860s, particularly the Holcomb Valley Gold Rush in California. After the post was abandoned in 1870, some buildings were still standing until 1910 at the latest. The place was flooded by Lake Roosevelt after the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam on the Columbia River.

The Kettle Falls Archeological District with 17 pre-contact-era sites as well as Fort Colville and St. Paul's Mission were registered on the National Register of Historic Places in 1974. Some archaeological studies were made in the 1960s when the lake was being lowered for repairs to the dam and other works. The district is highly significant in pre- and post-contact history for both the Native and the United States.

In 1859 the US Army established a new Fort Colville in Pinkney City , about three miles (4.8 km) northeast of what is now Colville. This fort was abandoned in 1882. In late 1871, when the Hudson's Bay Company lands were liquidated , Governor Edward Selig Solomon directed John Wynne to take these lands, including some areas of what is now Colville. The development of the city took place at the present location before 1882. In January 1883, WF Hooker presented the first Stevens County land map, named "Belmont" or "Bellmond". He supported the name change in Colville, so that the county seat could be moved to this location. On December 28, 1883, the Stevens County Board of County Commissioners , attended by District Administrator John U. Hofstetter, held a meeting to move the county records from the county seat of Pinkney City to Colville. At that meeting, councils approved the move of the city jail to Colville, provided the owners provided land for the county's offices. The officers were allowed to move to a building owned by John U. Hofstetter. On January 1, 1884, the Stevens County Court moved to Colville. According to tradition, the city was founded by John U. Hofstetter. It was officially recognized as a city on June 7, 1890.

In the 1950s, Colville Air Force Station in the hills above town was developed and operated as part of a network of radar stations for the Aerospace Defense Command , a major command of the United States Air Force . Some of the buildings still stand today. They are largely used by paintball players.
