LiVES ( Li VES V ideo E diting S ystem ) is a free , non-linear video editing program for the Linux operating system .

LiVES has an interface for additional modules to integrate decoders, encoders and effects. By using MPlayer and MEncoder , a myriad of video formats can be read in and output. You can also import material directly from FireWire connected video cameras and audio CDs .

There is also a multi-track mode for non-destructive editing . Several audio and video tracks can be arranged on a timeline , given effects and transitions can be set up.

There is also the "clip mode" with real-time functions, which is particularly interesting for video artists for visual performances . Here clips from a collection of video snippets can be played back, overlaid and given real-time effects at variable speeds. In addition, it can be controlled via keyboard, joystick or MIDI controller and can also be remotely controlled via a computer network.

development

The software developer is Gabriel Finch, who works as a video artist himself. He started working on the project at the end of 2002. Version 1.0.0 was released in July 2009.
