Living Coasts

Living Coasts was a small zoo in Torquay , Devon , specializing in aquatic animals. The zoo was part of the Paignton Zoo as part of the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, which also includes the Newquay Zoo . Living Coasts was a member of the British and Irish Association of Zoos and Aquariums (BIAZA), the European Association of Zoos and Aquaria (EAZA), and the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA).

The zoo was completely covered with a large net so that seabirds could fly around freely. This also included the individual enclosures.

history

The zoo opened in July 2004 (the 80th birthday of Paignton Zoo) and had more than 100,000 visitors a year before it closed. In July 2009, new mangrove aquariums were inaugurated. In the course of the corona pandemic , Living Coasts had to be permanently closed in June 2020.

Penguin Beach

Crested penguins and African penguins as well as the only shags outside of South Africa could be seen in Penguin Beach .

Fur seals

A group of South American fur seals also lived here .
