Loboptera decipiens is a species of cockroach in the Ectobiidae family .
features
The cockroaches have a length of 10-15 mm. They have a black basic color. Legs and antennae are black. The femora and tibia are spiked. The cockroaches have a relatively wide white or yellowish side edge that extends from the thorax to the rear end of the body.
distribution
The species is distributed throughout the Mediterranean (including North Africa).
Way of life
The cockroaches can be found both during the day and at dusk. Loboptera decipiens is a phytophagous cockroach. It feeds on detritus , vegetable waste such as leaves lying on the ground. The females lay ootheca with 20 or more eggs.
Parasitoids
It has been observed in France that Syntomosphyrum ishnopterae , a species of ore wasp in the family Eulophidae , is a hyperparasite . This parasitizes Zeuxevania splendidula , a species of hunger wasp , in the oothecae of Loboptera decipiens .
Similar species
Loboptera canariensis , a related species, is also found in the western Mediterranean. This has a light side edge, which however only extends over the first three body segments.
Others
The cockroaches are commercially available and can be kept in terrariums.
