The Locarno Classification is an international classification of goods for protected designs, which is regulated by an international agreement in the field of industrial property protection . It takes its name from the town of Locarno , where an international agreement on the classification of goods for designs (in some areas of law also known as registered designs) was passed in 1968 as the Locarno Agreement for the establishment of an international classification for industrial designs .
organization
The countries that have acceded to the international agreement form a "special association". Its work is coordinated by the WIPO International Bureau . As of January 2019, 56 countries have joined. The classification is adjusted again and again.
Scope and purpose
The Locarno classification currently classifies a total of 6,677 goods for which designs can be registered. It provides for 32 main classes and various sub-classes. According to the agreement, the goods are indicated in English and French.
When registering a design, the goods must be specified in which the design is to be incorporated or for which it is to be used. Only terms from the Locarno classification may be used here. This means that the class and subclass is known for each design, and you can research the relevant product groups on the basis of the Locarno classification, regardless of language. In addition, the national authorities for industrial property protection, mostly the respective patent offices , provide translations into the official languages of the acceding states in addition to the binding designations in English and French. The classification thus facilitates the handling of protected designs in international legal transactions.
Classification
The classification includes a division into classes and subclasses and, to make work easier, an alphabetical list of goods indicating the classes and subclasses into which they are classified. The main classes of the Locarno Classification (12th edition, valid from January 1, 2019, German version of the DMPA ) are:
