Loch Lomond is a distillery for whiskey in the town of Alexandria on the southern tip of Lake Loch Lomond in the Scottish Midlands.
history
The Loch Lomond distillery was founded by the American Littlemill Distillery Company in 1966. In 1984 the distillery was closed and in 1985 it became the property of the Bulloch family, who have been in the spirits business since 1842. In 1987 it reopened. In 1993 a coffey was still added. The Loch Lomond Distillery Co. is the only company in Scotland that both malt and grain whiskey produced in a distillery and therefore a single can offer blend.
The owners of Loch Lomond Distillery also acquired Glen Scotia in Campbeltown in 1994 .
The brand also became known through the comic series Tintin by Hergé , in which both the character Captain Haddock and Tim's loyal dog Struppi enjoy drinking a whiskey called Loch Lomond. However, Hergé invented the brand independently of the real distillery, because it is younger.
production
Loch Lomond has 2 traditional pot stills, six Lomond stills, also pot stills, but which have bottoms in the throat similar to the Coffey stills. In addition, a coffey still was added to the malt whiskey production in 1993, which allows the continuous production of whiskey, in contrast to the batch process of pot stills. These are otherwise only used in the grain whiskey sector.
Products
The distillery produces single malt whiskey under different names with different characters: Loch Lomond, Craiglodge, Croftengea, Glen Douglas, Inchmoan, Inchmurrin, Inchfad and Old Rhosdhu. Important products from Loch Lomond are the Blend High Commissioner Blended Scotch Whiskey and the vodka Glen’s Vodka .
The Loch Lomond Single Highland Malt Scotch Whiskey has an amber-golden color, a fine sweetness and yet slightly smoky on the nose. The taste is soft and smooth, lasting and mild in the finish. The Loch Lomond whiskey is characterized by Lerner as having a "scent: rubber, nutty, cheesy nose" and "taste: spicy, somewhat green and tasting of wood, strong and with an unbalanced character".
