Loch nan Gabhar is a lake on the Scottish Hebridean island of Islay . It is located in the south of the island north of the Oa peninsula about 1.4 kilometers east of the village of Kintra . The lake is a maximum of 480 m long and 270 m wide and stretches in an east-west direction. At the north-western end of Loch nan Gabhar, a small stream flows off, which after a short run in a north-westerly direction flows into the Kintra River , which eventually flows into Laggan Bay . A few hundred meters east of the lake, the A846 runs between Port Ellen and Bowmore .
A few hundred meters southwest of Loch nan Gabhar is the Standing Stone Carragh Bhan , which is said to mark the grave site of Godred Crovans , King of the Kingdom of the Isles . The 2.3 m high stone is 50 cm wide at the base. Near the stone is a second stone of similar dimensions and a partially covered cross plate. Various other stones in the area may be associated with Carragh Bhan.
