Lochnaw Castle is a mansion near the Scottish village of Leswalt in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A. In addition, various outbuildings are separately protected as monuments. The associated gardens, which, like the main building, are classified as Category A buildings, deserve special mention.

history

The earliest fortification called Lochnaw Castle is now known as Old Lochnaw Castle . Located on a small island in Lochnaw Loch, the fortress was built before 1363. It was abandoned after it was conquered by Archibald Douglas, 3rd Earl of Douglas in 1390. Today only fragments are preserved. After the lake's water level was lowered in the early 18th century, the stone material of the fortress was probably used to build a wing of today's Lochnaw Castle, which was built in 1704 and has since been demolished.

In 1426 a new fortress was built on the south bank of the lake. However, no details are known about this structure. It was probably in the same location as the present mansion. This was built in 1663 for Andrew Agnew, 2nd Baronet . A tower house from the previous building from the 16th century was integrated. Over the centuries the mansion was expanded.

Lochnaw Castle is the ancestral seat of the Agnew Baronets , who are the chief of the Agnew clan .

Gardens

The gardens, which were established around 1812, are located around 300 m southwest of the manor house. John Hay is responsible for the design . A quarry stone wall surrounds the irregularly shaped, polygonal garden. It ends with a cap made of red sandstone . There is a brick segment along the north flank . There used to be greenhouses there , but they have not been preserved. Several arched portals lead into the gardens.

A round pavilion is integrated into the wall at one corner on the southeast side. Its quarry stone masonry is set off with natural stone surrounds and was previously plastered. Ribbons made of red sandstone structure the facades. The garden side is designed with a loggia . The final slate roof rests on four pillars.
