Coordinates: 12 ° 47 ′ S , 143 ° 21 ′ E The Lockhart River Aboriginal Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of Queensland . The area is 3575 km² and has about 710 inhabitants.
geography
The Shire is located on the east coast of the Cape York Peninsula in the north of the state about 530 km north of Cairns and 1920 km north of the capital Brisbane .
Almost all residents live in the Lockhart River settlement in the northeast of the LGA on Lloyd Bay.
history
A mission for the indigenous peoples was set up south of the present-day settlement in 1924, which was closed during World War II and reopened in 1947. In 1967 it was handed over to state administration and twenty years later it was given to the Aboriginal community living there . In 2001, a large area around the mouth of the Lockhart River was given to the Aborigines in trust and the Shire was established. It is under limited local Aboriginal self-government.
administration
The Lockhart River Council has five members. The Mayor and four other Councilors are elected by all residents of the Shire. The LGA is not divided into electoral districts.
