Locus iste (“This place”) are the opening words of the Latin motet for four-part mixed choir a cappella by Anton Bruckner ( WAB 23) in C major . Bruckner composed the work in 1869 for the inauguration of the votive chapel in the Cathedral of the Conception of Mary in Linz .

history

Bruckner completed the work on August 11, 1869. The performance did not take place on the feast day of the inauguration of the votive chapel. Locus iste premiered on October 29, 1869. The text is the gradual (intermediate song ) for the parish fair . It is still sung today on this occasion.

text

Locus iste a Deo factus est,
inaestimabile sacramentum,
irreprehensibilis est.

This place was created by God,
an inestimable secret,
there is nothing wrong with it.

For the biblical context, see Genesis chapter 28, verse 17.

Quotes

"It is a piece of music that is as simple as it is poignant, which later became very popular because of the technical requirements that the choir could easily cope with, and which can still be heard today, especially at church fairs."
