Logan Windmill

The Logan Windmill is a tower windmill near the Scottish town of Ardwell in the Council Area Dumfries and Galloway . In 1972 the building was included in the Scottish monument lists in the highest monument category A.

description

The windmill is now only in ruins and is listed in the register of endangered listed buildings in Scotland. It is located on the Rhins of Galloway about two kilometers south of Ardwell near the west bank of Luce Bay . It is a former flour mill, probably from the later 17th century. The exact year of construction is not known, but an entry from around 1684 contains the information that Logan's laird had the mill recently built. The mill is already listed as a ruin on a map from the 1840s. A nearby mill ruin dates back to the 18th century and may have replaced the Logan Windmill.

The cylindrical tower rises from a natural hill. The quarry stone masonry of the round tower is around 90 cm thick and encloses an interior space of around three meters. The tower has a height of 7.6 meters and closes with a circumferential battlement reinforcement, which is, however, more recent. Entrance doors are on the east and west sides. A barrel vault is accessible from the north side . The wide opening with a pressed round arch is partially lined with brick . Parts of the vault, especially the connection to the mill, have collapsed today.
