The Lodge House Gotha was the house of the Gotha Masonic Lodge " Ernst zum Compaß ". It was built in 1881 at what is now Ekhofplatz 3 in Gotha and destroyed in 1937.

history

The Freemasons' movement had existed in the Duchy of Saxe-Gotha-Altenburg since the 1740s. In 1806 the Ernst zum Compaß Lodge was founded. It belonged to the Great National Mother Lodge "To the Three World Globes" in Berlin.

For the 75th anniversary of the society, Duke Ernst II of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha initiated and sponsored the construction of the new lodge house. It was built on what was then Karolinenplatz and was inaugurated on September 3, 1882. The house was one of the earliest Freimaurerbauten in oriental style , which later especially in the buildings of the same time in New York , founded Shriners was used ( Tripoli Shrine Temple (Milwaukee) u. A.).

In 1934 the lodge was closed by the National Socialists and the lodge building was demolished in 1937. A movie theater was built in its place, which was converted into a cultural center after the Gotha City Theater was destroyed in 1945 at the beginning of the 1950s .
