Locomotive service load

In the case of locomotives that have non-driven axles ( running axles ), a distinction is made between the locomotive service load (also: service load ) and the locomotive friction load (also: friction weight):

  • the service weight is the same as the load on all axles, i.e. the total weight (more precisely: the total mass) of the locomotive
  • With the frictional load, only the weight (more precisely: the mass) is taken into account, which rests on the driven axles ( driving axles or coupled axles ); the weight on the running axis is not included in this.

In the case of locomotives that only have driven axles, i.e. that have no running axles, the service and friction loads are identical.

When determining the weight, it is usually assumed that the operational supplies carried on the locomotive are only 2/3 full in order to obtain a practical value (e.g. because of the weight loss during operation, which is due to the consumption of the carried fuel reserve is caused).
