The Lokka Reservoir [ ˈlɔkːɑ ] ( Finnish Lokan tekojärvi ) is located in Finland in the municipality of Sodankylä north of the Arctic Circle . It is probably the largest reservoir in Europe west of the Dnieper . Its maximum area is 417 km²; when the water level is low it is only 216 km².
Planning for the reservoir began in the 1950s. The building permit was granted on December 7, 1966, and the dam was ready by 1967 . The barrier structure is a dam . The main purpose is to generate energy from hydropower . 675 GWh are generated annually. The water level fluctuates between 245 and 240 m above sea level during operation. The storage capacity is 2.1 billion m³, of which 1.444 billion are the controllable operating room .
The reservoir is located in the boreal zone of Finland near the small towns of Lokka and Hanhireikä. The dammed watercourse is the Luiro River , a tributary of the Kemijoki . Another large reservoir in Finland is Lake Porttipahta . Since 1981, water from the Lokka reservoir has been transferred to Lake Porttipahta through the Vuotso Canal .
The reservoir is very rich in fish. Many birds also live here, the most famous of which is the sea eagle .
