The Luiro [ ˈlui̯rɔ ] is a river in the Finnish part of Lapland . It is one of the most important tributaries of the Kemijoki and with a length of 227 kilometers is the seventh longest river in Finland. The Luiro rises from Lake Luirojärvi in the Saariselkä -Fjell area. From there it flows southwards mostly through uninhabited areas of the municipality of Sodankylä and joins the Kitinen around seven kilometers north of Pelkosenniemi , just before it flows into the Kemijoki, the longest river in Finland.
In order to regulate the amount of water in the Kemijoki, the upper reaches of the Luiro was dammed into the Lokka reservoir in 1967 , which is 417 km² at its maximum water level. There is also a hydroelectric power station at the Lokka reservoir .
