The Kitinen is a river in the Finnish part of Lapland . It is one of the most important tributaries of the Kemijoki and is the sixth longest river in Finland with a length of 278 kilometers . It rises in the area of the watershed on the border of the municipalities of Inari and Sodankylä and flows south through the municipality of Sodankylä. The community center of Sodankylä is located at the mouth of the Jeesiöjoki tributary in the Kitinen. Around seven kilometers north of Pelkosenniemi , the Luiro flows into the Kitinen from the left. About three kilometers north of Pelkosenniemi, the Kitinen itself flows into the Kemijoki, Finland's longest river.
Hydropower plants
There are seven hydropower plants at Kitinen . In order to regulate the amount of water, the upper reaches of the river to the Porttipahta reservoir was dammed in 1970 , which is 214 km² in size at a maximum water level.
