The Lokremise is a former Lokremise in the city of St. Gallen . The building, which is now a cultural center, is, together with the adjacent water tower, a cultural monument of national importance . It is the largest preserved locomotive ring depot in Switzerland .

history

The Lokremise was built between 1903 and 1911, during the embroidery bloom and the simultaneous expansion and renovation of the main station . The construction is considered to be a pioneer construction in reinforced concrete . It was decorated with an Art Nouveau facade , like most of the buildings in St. Gallen at that time - including the adjacent train station and the embroidery shops in the station district. The remise included an adjacent bathhouse (1902), two tall chimneys and the still existing water tower ( Robert Maillart 1906) to supply the steam locomotives .

Until the 1980s, the Remise was less and less needed. Thanks to the electrification , a round shed and its turntable for turning the locomotives were no longer necessary. The locomotives also required less maintenance and this was centralized to a few locations. Temporary cultural uses (e.g. through the Hauser & Wirth collection) could only stop the decline of the building to a limited extent.

On behalf of the canton and with the consent of the voters, the Remise was completely renovated in 2009/2010. The inside of the building was practically completely gutted and the new infrastructure built into it. By installing three independent units (house-in-house principle), the building was divided into four zones: two theater zones of the St. Gallen Theater , an art zone and a general zone with an entrance area and restaurant. The renovation should make the origin of the building visible. Thus, the original tracks, the old wooden gates, the original columns, as well as the facade and the windows have been preserved. Only the sickle, which serves to connect all rooms, was added as a new extension.

In September 2010, the Lokremise was opened with a 1000-day festival and has been run by the Lokremise Foundation ever since .

The Lokremise Foundation coordinates the cultural and catering operations and is also responsible for the “small” maintenance of the listed building. As the owner of the building, the canton of St.Gallen is responsible for the “major” structural maintenance.

Cross-disciplinary cultural center

Today in are Lokremise three partners (Concert and Theater St. Gallen , cinema Kinok , Kunstmuseum St. Gallen ) and a catering partner (Restaurant LOCAL, PSG gastronomy) gathered under one roof. At the same time, the Lokremise is open to guest organizers for cultural projects, conferences and presentations, company or festive events.

If the weather is good, you can dine on the roundabout; Christoph Büchel's installation can be experienced in the water tower every Sunday .
