Charlotte "Lolo" von Hornstein (born April 18, 1861 in Winkel am Rhein , † 1941) was a German painter .

life and work

She was born in 1861 as the daughter of the composer Robert von Hornstein and his wife Charlotte in Winkel am Rhein . In 1896 she married the Munich painter prince Franz von Lenbach after his marriage to Magdelena Countess Moltke had failed. In contrast to his first marriage, the marriage between Lenbach and Lolo was harmonious and was characterized by a common interest in art and mutual affection. Lenbach had already met her in her childhood as a frequent guest in her parents' house and later corrected her study sheets when she was studying painting with Nikolaus Gysis . Their daughter Gabriele was born in 1899.

Although she is only mentioned today as the artist wife and muse of Franz von Lenbach, she was an independent painter and was considered a talented portraitist in Munich. However, like many of her contemporaries, it would never have occurred to her to move into the public eye. Rather, she took an active part in her husband's work: She supported him with the arrangements for his portrait sessions and at the same time organized both the studio and the lavish social life in the Villa Lenbach , where the couple had settled down. After the death of her husband in 1904, Lolo devoted himself entirely to the care of his artistic estate, which was exhibited in the studio of the Villa Lenbach.
