Longxu

Longxu ( Chinese  龙 圩区 , Pinyin Lóngxū Qū ; Zhuang Lungzhih Gih ) is a district of the prefecture -level city of Wuzhou on the eastern edge of the Guangxi Autonomous Region of the Zhuang in the People's Republic of China . It has an area of ​​981 km². Since it was only newly created in February 2013 through the outsourcing of part of the territory of Cangwu County , the number of inhabitants is only an estimate (approx. 303,000).

Peculiarity of the place name

The character 圩 is a Cantonese word for "market", "market place", "weekly market" and is read here . In combination with lóng , the place name translates as "dragon market". The character 圩 is better known in China in the reading wéi , in which it means "dam", "wall" to delimit and protect fields or villages from floods and floods. Thus Longwei is a common misreading of the place name 龙 圩.
