Looking Back ( English for looking back is) an English-language pop song, with Aksel Kankaanranta the television broadcast Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2,020 won. With the title he was supposed to represent Finland at the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 in Rotterdam .

On January 21, 2020, the performers for the upcoming Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu were introduced, including Kankaanranta. On January 27th, his competition title Looking Back was presented to the public. On March 7th, Kankaanranta won the UMK with the highest score of the jury and the second highest score of the audience.

The title is written by Joonas Angeria, Whitney Phillips, and Connor, Riley and Toby McDonough. Angeria produced it as well.

Music and lyrics

The title addresses topics such as Weltschmerz, love and imperfection. The interpreter wants to encourage people to use the day. He comments on this as follows:

Finland should have performed this song in the second semifinals of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020. However, due to the advancing COVID-19 pandemic , the competition was canceled.

reception

ESCXtra praised the singer's voice, but noted that the title was the UMK's worst contribution. It is not possible to remember the song afterwards. Eurovisionary was also of the opinion that Erika Vikman would have been a better choice. On the other hand, the quality of the text was praised. ESC Kompakt wrote that the song was "definitely way too boring" for the majority of fans and that it would probably have failed to qualify in the ESC semifinals. It is a song that you have to get involved with.
