Lopes Mendes

The beach of Lopes Mendes is located in the southeast of Ilha Grande , on territory of the municipality of Angra dos Reis in the Brazilian state of Rio de Janeiro . It is considered to be one of the most beautiful beaches in the country.

The almost white sandy beach stretches for almost 2.5 km along the Atlantic coast . As it faces the open ocean, Lopes Mendes beach is characterized by comparatively strong surf. In addition to bathers, surfers are particularly drawn to the beach. Like most of the beaches on the south coast of Ilha Grande, Lopes Mendes is uninhabited and is surrounded by dense restinga vegetation towards the interior of the island .

Visitors can reach the beach either on foot or by boat. Many tourists come via the hiking trail that leads from Vila do Abraão via the beaches of Palmas and Pouso through the forest to Lopes Mendes in about two hours. From Vila do Abraão, excursion boats regularly go around the eastern end of the island to the beach when the sea is calm.
