history

In the 18th century, Vila do Abraão was the center of the Ilha Grande and the main hub of the slave trade for the southern part of the Rio de Janeiro area. In one of the darkest epochs of Brazilian history, ships with men, women and children from Africa landed on the beaches of Palmas and Dois Rios for over 200 years , destined for the heavy work on the sugar cane plantations and fazendas (farms) of Rio de Janeiro .

In order to be able to meet the growing demand for labor after the abolition of slavery in 1850, Brazil opened the gates for mainly European and Asian immigrants. Since some of these countries were affected by cholera and other epidemics at that time , Emperor Dom Pedro I had a quarantine hospital built on the Ilha Grande near Vila do Abraão, where the immigrants had to stay for a while before they could "officially" were allowed to enter Brazil. The ruins of the hospital are still there today, although overgrown by Atlantic rainforest .
