The Loquitz Viaduct is a railway bridge on the Ludwigsstadt – Lehesten railway line near Lauenhain on the border between Bavaria and Thuringia .
history
At the state border between Bavaria and Thuringia (formerly Saxony-Meiningen ) the route, which was opened in 1885, crossed the Loquitz river and made it necessary to build a railway bridge. The Loquitz Viaduct is probably the only arched bridge made of diabase and slate in the world . The building material for the bridge came from the ducal break in Lehesten (today Lehesten Slate Park ) and the nearby Krummholzhammer. In 1935 the bridge got a concrete parapet.
In 1952 the section of the railway line on the Thuringian side (then GDR ) was dismantled. Part of the former route is now used as the “Schieferpfad - On the trail of blue gold” hiking trail.
