Viscount of Stormont
Viscount of Stormont is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
The headquarters of the Viscounts is Scone Palace near Scone in Perthshire .
Award
The title he was given on August 16, 1621 to David Murray, 1st Lord Scone . On April 7, 1605, he had already been awarded the title Lord Scone , also in the Peerage of Scotland . Both titles were awarded with a special regulation on succession. In the absence of his own male descendants, the titles could be inherited successively to his following relatives and their male descendants:
- Sir Mungo Murray , fourth son of John Murray, 1st Earl of Tullibardine ;
- John Murray († 1640), who was raised to Earl of Annandale in 1625 ;
- Sir Andrew Murray († 1644), who was raised to Lord Balvaird in 1641 .
The 1st Viscount died childless on August 27, 1631, whereupon the aforementioned Sir Mungo Murray, as the 2nd Viscount, inherited the title. He died in March 1642 without a male heir, after which the title fell to James Murray, 2nd Earl of Annandale , the son of the aforementioned John Murray. He also died childless on December 28, 1658, whereupon his earldom expired and the Viscountcy and Lordship fell to David Murray, 2nd Lord Balvaird , the son of the aforementioned Sir Andrew Murray. His descendants still hold the title today.
The 7th Viscount inherited in 1793 from his uncle William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield , the title of Earl of Mansfield (second award), which was awarded to him in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1792 . His grandson, the 4th Earl and 9th Viscount, inherited the title Earl of Mansfield (first conferred) from his grandmother in 1843, which was awarded in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1776. The Earldoms have since been united, the Viscountcy of Stormont, and the Lordships Scone and Balvaird have since been listed as subordinate titles to the respective Earl. The eldest son of the incumbent earl carries the courtesy title Viscount Stormont as his prospective title heir ( Heir Apparent ) .
