Earl of Melville is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .

The Earls' family seat was Melville House near Monimail in Fife and is now Glenferness House near Nairn in the Highland .

Award, subordinate and other titles

The title was awarded on April 8, 1690 to the military and politician George Melville, 4th Lord Melville . Along with the Earldom, he was awarded the subordinate titles Viscount of Kirkcaldy and Lord Raith, Monymaill and Balwearie . As early as 1643 he had inherited the title Lord Melville , of Monymaill, from his father , which had been bestowed on his ancestor Robert Melville on April 30, 1616.

His son, who later became 2nd Earl, inherited the titles of 5th Earl of Leven and 3rd Lord Balgonie through his mother in 1681 . The Earldoms of Melville and Leven have since been united.

The alleged heir to the title ( Heir Presumptive ) is the uncle of the current title holder Hon. Archibald Ronald Leslie-Melville (* 1957).
