Earl of Eglinton
Earl of Eglinton (also Eglintoun ) is a hereditary British title in the Peerage of Scotland .
The respective Earl of Eglinton is also the hereditary clan chief of Clan Montgomery .
The Earls' family seat was Eglinton Castle near Kilwinning in North Ayrshire until 1925 and is now Balhomie House near Cargill in Perthshire .
Award and subordinate titles
The title was created on January 20, 1508 for Hugh Montgomerie, 2nd Lord Montgomerie . This was an important peer who supported the Scottish king.
The father of the first earl had been raised to Lord Montgomerie as early as 1445 . As Lordship of Parliament, this title also belongs to the Peerage of Scotland and is used as a courtesy title by the eldest son of the respective earl .
Since his great-great-great-grandson, the 5th Earl, was childless, he obtained an amendment to the inheritance regulation of the titles with a deed dated November 28, 1611, so that, in the absence of male descendants of his own, this was also passed on to his cousin Sir Alexander Seton of Foulstruther , the third son of his aunt Margaret Montgomerie, Countess of Winton, and his male descendants, and in the absence of these also to his younger brothers Sir Thomas Seton of Over Olwestob and Sir John Seton of St Germains and their male descendants. Accordingly, his cousin Alexander inherited him as the 6th Earl in 1612, who then changed his surname from Seton to Montgomerie .
His great-great-grandson, the 12th Earl, was also awarded the title of Baron Ardrossan , of Ardrossan in the County of Ayr , on February 15, 1806 . This belongs to the Peerage of the United Kingdom and, in contrast to his Scottish titles, entitles the Earl to an automatic seat in the British House of Lords .
His son, the 13th Earl, was also awarded the title Earl of Winton in the Peerage of the United Kingdom in 1859 , which had previously been worn by a relative. The 13th Earl was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland from 1852 to 1853 and from 1858 to 1859 .
Today's title holder has been his great-great-great-grandson Hugh Montgomerie, 19th Earl of Eglinton , since 2018 .
