Lorenzo Suárez de Mendoza
Lorenzo Suárez de Mendoza , Count of Coruña (* 1518 in Guadalajara , Spain , † June 19, 1583 in Mexico City ) was a Spanish colonial administrator who served as Viceroy of New Spain.
Life
Origin and time in Europe
Suárez de Mendoza came from a Spanish noble family. He was already over 60 years old when King Philip II sent him to New Spain to replace Martín Enríquez de Almansa as viceroy.
Tenure as Viceroy of New Spain
He took office on October 4, 1580 with the formal entry into Mexico City. He saw the primary task of his term in office in the fight against corruption, which was rampant under the colonial administration at the time. For this purpose he set up about the commercial court ( Tribunal de Comercio ). He died in office on June 19, 1583 and was initially buried in the Convent of San Francisco in Mexico City. Years later, his bones were transferred to Europe.
