Martín Enríquez de Almansa

Martín Enríquez de Almansa y Ulloa ( also in a different spelling: Almanza ) (* around 1510 in Toro , Castile-León , Spain ; † March 9, 1583 in Lima , Peru ) was a Spanish officer who served as viceroy from 1568 to 1580 New Spain and served as Viceroy of Peru from 1581 until his death in 1583 .

Life

He was born to Francisco Enríquez de Almansa and Isabel de Ulloa into a Spanish aristocratic family.

Viceroy of New Spain

In May 1568 King Philip II appointed him Viceroy of New Spain, today's Mexico . He took office on November 5, 1568. His twelve-year tenure was marked by the suppression of several Indian revolts. In addition, the quality of silver processing improved greatly under his aegis and trade to and from Europe via the port of Veracruz took off.

Viceroy of Peru

Because of his successes, the king made him Viceroy of Peru. In view of his poor health and his old age, his brief tenure in Lima was unspectacular; it was also overshadowed by a severe earthquake in Arequipa in 1582. Enríquez died in office.
