Loretta Napoleoni (* 1955 in Rome ) is an Italian journalist and political analyst. She is an expert on terrorism and its financing and is known for having calculated the size of the global terrorist economy.

life and career

Loretta Napoleoni was born and raised in Rome .

In the early 1980s she worked for the Hungarian National Bank on a project on the convertibility of the Hungarian forint into European currencies; their work became a template for the convertibility of the ruble a decade later.

Napoleoni regularly lectures on terrorist financing and advises governments on counter-terrorism . As chair of the group against the financing of terrorism, she brought together heads of state from all over the world at the “Club de Madrid” in order to develop new strategies to combat the financing of terrorist networks.

Publications

Napoleoni wrote novels and travel guides to cities in Italy and translated and edited books on terrorism. Her bestseller Terror Incorporated has been translated into 12 languages; Dossier Baghdad is a financial thriller set during the Gulf War and she has published a nonfiction book on Iraq: Insurgent Iraq: Al-Zarqawi and the New Generation . Rogue Economics was published in 2008 by the US publisher Seven Stories Press and by Turnaround in England. Her book, 10 Years That Shook The World: A Timeline of Events from 2001 , was published as an e-book by Seven Stories Press on September 6, 2011, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. It covers topics as diverse as financial policy, advances in science and technology, new economic strategies, propaganda, environmental issues and the revolutionary forces of social media.

The Italian edition of her book “China - Better Capitalism - What the West Can Learn from China” won the 2010 Association for Economic Progress Award (Premio dell'Associazione per il Progresso Economico).
