Lorraine Schembri Orland

Lorraine Schembri Orland (born June 21, 1959 in Malta ) is a Maltese lawyer and judge at the European Court of Human Rights .

Live and act

Schembri Orland studied law at the University of Malta until 1976 and after completing her studies worked as a parliamentary correspondent for The Times of Malta . In 1981 she was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. She then worked as a lawyer in Malta, mainly as a barrister , and specialized in family and marriage law. In 1988 she became President of the Maltese National Women's Council and in the same year elected executive member of the Conseil International des Femmes (CIF) . In the following years she was a member of various international committees aimed at improving women's rights and reducing gender-specific discrimination. In 1996 she also obtained the title of Magistra iuris in European law. In 2000 she was one of the main drafters of the Maltese Law against Domestic Violence. In 2012, Schembri Orland became a judge in the First Hall of the Maltese Civil Court.

In April 2019, Schembri Orland was elected Judge at the European Court of Human Rights to succeed Vincent De Gaetano as representative of Malta . She began her term of office, which is expected to last until 2028, on September 20, 2019.
