Die (D100): Zocchihedron

Louis Joseph "Lou" Zocchi (* around 1940 *) is an American dice designer .

Life

He was a technical sergeant in the United States Air Force . Shortly before his retirement, he founded the company Zocchi Games in Biloxi ( Mississippi ) , which was later renamed Gamescience . There he invented several exotic types of dice. His main focus was on the perfection of conventional dice, so that their probability distribution should be as ideal as possible. Zocchi rejects rounded corners, which improve the rolling properties at the expense of accuracy.

In addition to these quality cubes, he became known primarily for his creative cube constructions. Among other things, he invented real five-sided (W5), seven-sided (W7) and nine-sided (W9) cubes. His most famous creation is the real hundred-sided cube (D100), which is also named after him Zocchihedron . He presented this in 1985. A more recent development (together with Alexander Simkin) is the 24-page “D-Total” (“Dime-Total”), which replaces 18 cubes by means of multiple inscriptions. a. D2 (= W2), W3, W4, W5, W7, W8, W10, W12, W20 and W24.

In the meantime, Zocchi has withdrawn from active business.

Games

In addition to dice, he also invented some tabletop and wargaming games called

  • Alien Space ,
  • The Battle of Britain and
  • Air force .
