Lough Arrow

Lough Arrow ( Irish Loch Arbhach ) is a lake in Ireland in County Sligo .

General

Lough Arrow is in the south of County Sligo on the border with County Roscommon . It is 14 miles south of Sligo , 10 miles west of Ballymote and 4 miles north of Boyle in Roscommon. Its north-south extension is 8 km, at its widest point it measures 2.5 km. Its area is about 14.5 km². The lake lies at the foot of the Curlew Mountains and is a popular fishing spot because of its wild salmon stocks and is fed by a number of springs.

On the west bank is Carrowkeel with an extensive Neolithic complex that includes several passage graves . On the east bank are the ruins of the Dominican monastery Ballindoon near Ballynary, the ancestral home of the O'Higgins family, who are very well known in Ireland and Chile .

A modern metal sculpture called The Gaelic Chieftain ("the Gaelic clan leader ") by Maurice Harron stands on a vantage point above the lake .

Legend and mythology

According to Irish mythology , the battle of northern Mag Tuired , also known as the second or great battle ( Gaelic : An Dara Cath Maighe Tuireadh ), took place on Lough Arrow between the Túatha Dé Danann and the Fomori , allied with the Firbolg . After this battle the Túatha Dé Danann were the masters of Ireland until the arrival of the Milesians .
