Louis Mermaz

Louis Mermaz (born August 20, 1931 in Paris ) is a French politician of the Parti socialiste (PS) , former minister and president of the National Assembly . He was also mayor of the French city of Vienne from 1971 to 2001 .

Life

After attending school, Mermaz studied history and began his political career in 1967 when he was first elected a member of the National Assembly and, after several re-elections, most recently from 1997 to 2001, represented the Isère department . At the same time, in 1971 he also became mayor of Vienne, the second largest city in the Isère department, and held this position until 2001. He was also President of the General Council of the Isère Department between 1976 and 1985 .

On May 22, 1981 he was appointed by Prime Minister Pierre Mauroy as Minister of Equipment and Transport ( Ministre de l'équipement et des transports ) in his cabinet, but was only a month until June 22, 1981.

He then became President of the newly elected National Assembly on July 2, 1981, and held this position until April 1, 1986.

On May 12, 1988 he was again Minister of Transport and as such was a member of Prime Minister Michel Rocard's government for almost six weeks . He then became chairman of the Parti Socialiste faction in the National Assembly on June 23, 1988 . Prime Minister Rocard appointed him again to his cabinet on October 3, 1990, this time as Minister of Agriculture and Forests. As such, he was also a member of the subsequent governments of Édith Cresson and Pierre Bérégovoy . As part of a government reshuffle, he appointed him Minister for Relations with Parliament and government spokesman on October 2, 1992. Mermaz remained in these functions until the end of Bérégovoy's tenure on March 29, 1993.

After his last re-election in 1997, he left the National Assembly in 2001 and was instead elected a member of the Senate on September 23, 2001 . Since then he has also represented the Isère department there.
