background
The writing duo Rainger and Robin originally wrote the song for the film Temple of Beauty , but it was never used there. The song was eventually sung by Bing Crosby in the film She Loves Me Not . His version also appeared as a shellac record (Brunswick 6936). The song received an Oscar nomination for Best Song in 1935 .
The song was not only popular due to the film, but was also used by Jack Benny for his television and radio show and was used by him as a running gag . In this way he achieved further notoriety, so that the score sold over half a million times. During the Second World War , Jack Benny also used the song for the turning point in his career. Benny, known as a comedian, appeared at a benefit show at the Hollywood Bowl in 1944 and played the song as a violin concerto with Alfred Wallenstein and the Los Angeles Philharmonic in all seriousness and without smiling, and received standing ovations from both the audience and the orchestra itself .
Other popular versions are by Paul Whiteman (1934), Spike Jones and his City Slickers, and Erroll Garner .
