It is the only library outside of Europe that has all four of the first printed Bibles: the Gutenberg Bible , the "1460 Bible" (or Mentelin Bible ), the "36-line Bible" and the "1462 Bible".

The collection also includes manuscripts by Abraham Lincoln , Johann Sebastian Bach and Ludwig van Beethoven , a copy of the United States' Declaration of Independence and first editions by Shakespeare and John Milton .

The library also contains significant collections of medieval manuscripts and incunabula , printed books on travel and expeditions, and Americana .

founder

The Scheide Library was founded by three generations of collectors who owed their fortune to the oil industry: William T. Scheide , his son John H. Scheide and his grandson William H. Scheide (1914-2014). They also founded the »Bach Arien Gruppe« to stimulate interest in Bach's cantatas.
