The Lower Barrakka Gardens (painted: Il-Barrakka t'Isfel ) are a park in Valletta , the capital of Malta . They are located on the lower part of St. Christopher's Bastion, which in turn is part of Valletta's city fortifications.
Origin and brief description
The garden was created by French troops during the siege of Valletta by the insurgent population of Malta in 1798–1800. The garden complex probably originally served to produce vegetables and crops for the cut off garrison.
A monument in the form of a neoclassical temple was erected in the gardens in 1810 in memory of Alexander Ball . Other monuments remind of the time of the second great siege of Malta . The garden area offers an unobstructed view of the entrance to Grand Harbor. There are also well-tended green areas, paths, seating areas and a fountain.
About 600 meters southwest and further up in the cityscape are the Upper Barrakka Gardens with a viewing terrace over a large part of the city. There are numerous memorial plaques dedicated to the Hungarian Revolution of 1956, the Prague Spring , Giuseppe Garibaldi and the 50th anniversary of the European Union.
use
The park is occasionally used for concerts and festive events. As a historical attraction and one of the few green spaces in the urban area of Valletta, it will be preserved from the point of view of monument preservation.
