Luc Foisneau (* 1963 in Blois , France ) is a French philosopher specializing in the history of modern and contemporary political philosophy. Foisneau is currently Directeur de recherche at the French national research institute CNRS in Paris.

biography

Foisneau worked at the University of Tours , the University of Caen (Center de philosophie politique et juridique, 1993–1995) and at the CNRS (Center d'histoire de la philosophie modern, 1995–2003) before moving to Oxford University , where he continued his research in the Department of Politics and International Relations and at the Maison Francaise (2003–2006). In addition, he worked as a lecturer in political philosophy at Sciences Po Paris between 1996 and 2003 .

Research priorities

Foisneau dedicated his doctoral thesis to the theological dimension of the power theory according to Hobbes , an aspect that has hitherto been neglected. He also underlines the importance of the knowledge of the absolute power of God by a philosopher who is often accused of atheism, as well as the connection between this recognition of the omnipotence of God and the main concepts of the moral and political philosophy of the author of Leviathan. In 2001 he received the prize of the Association of Professors and Teachers of Science Po Paris for the publication of this doctoral thesis.

For almost 15 years, Foisneau has dealt with two sides of modern political thought, the legal theory of sovereignty and reason of state. He is currently interested in social contract theories within the framework of John Rawls' theory of justice . His current deliberations concern the way in which the idea of justice is profoundly changing modern political thought.

Between 2001 and 2014, Foisneau directed work on an encyclopedia on 17th century French philosophers, to which 167 authors contributed. A first version in English appeared in 2008 - "The Dictionary of Seventeenth-Century French Philosophers"; an updated and expanded version will be published in French in 2015: "Dictionnaire des philosophes français du 17e siècle: acteurs et réseaux du savoir."
