Act

Since 1970 Derks showed a strong interest in psychological issues. In 1976 he began studying social psychology , which he completed in 1982. His thesis dealt with the philosophy of pragmatism . In 1977 Derks came into contact with the work of NLP founders Richard Bandler and John Grinder . In 1983 he received his training as an NLP practitioner at the New York Training Institute for NLP. In 1985 he advanced to the "Institute for Eclectical Psychology (IEP)" in Nijmegen to become an NLP Master Practitioner. At the same time he worked as a researcher for the Dutch art museums Rijksmuseum Amsterdam , Centraal Museum Utrecht , Van Gogh Museum and Maritime Museum in Rotterdam. The subject was the behavior of visitors to large exhibitions. In 1992 he published the novel “De postume colleges van Herman Blaas”, which won the Dutch Lift Foundation's literary prize for the best literary debut in the Netherlands.

In 1986 Derks decided to devote himself exclusively to NLP and related issues. Since 1993 he has been working on the development of new methods for analyzing and changing social systems. The focus of his research activities is the connection between the pragmatically oriented field of "Neuro-Linguistic Programming" (NLP) and the issues of social psychology. The model of the “social panorama” emerged from this. Derks has published several books and articles on the subject in journals and on his website.

In 2000 Derks founded together with Wolfgang Walker (Berlin) and Walter Ötsch (Linz) the research network "The International Laboratory for Mental Space Research" (ILMSR), whose activities and publications deal with the application of the theory of mental space to questions of the neuro -Linguistic programming (NLP), psychotherapy , psychiatry , cultural history , politics and economics .

Starting from the question of how people mentally represent their relationships to one another , he examined the unconscious psychological mechanisms that constitute the human relationship experience. He described the "social panorama" in the early 1990s. In his opinion, it is an independent psychological system that determines the subjective experience of social relationships . In his opinion, the “social panorama” has a lasting effect on how people perceive others, think about them and what feelings they experience towards them.
