Lucian Ippolitowitsch Klimowitsch

Lucian Ippolitowitsch Klimovich ( Russian Люциан Ипполитович Климович / Ljuzijan Ippolitowitsch Klimovich ; born September 22 . Jul / 5. October  1907 greg. In Kazan ; †  19th July 1989 in Moscow ) was a Soviet Orientalist and Islamic scholar .

Life

Klimovich finished his studies at the St. Petersburg State University in 1929 . In 1933 he was given a chair there himself.

From 1934 to 1953 he taught at the Moscow State State University (Московский государственный областной университет) and from 1960 to 1989 at the Maxim Gorki Institute of Literature .

He is considered an important representative of Soviet Islamic and Oriental studies. He examined the origins of Islam from the perspective of historical materialism, following on from the ideas of Michail Andrejewitsch Reissner . Klimowitsch negated the historicity of Mohammed and considered the Koran to be a work of later times. He was a member of the Association of the Fighting Wicked . In 1947 he became a member of the CPSU . Klimovich experienced the climax of his career under Khrushchev at the Gorki Literature Institute. He had a strong influence on the party's understanding of Islam.
