Lucien Birgé

Lucien Birgé (* 1950 in France ) is a French mathematician .

Live and act

Lucien Birgé studied from 1970 to 1974 at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris . He then became an assistant at the University of Pierre and Marie Curie . In 1980 he received his PhD from the University of Paris VII . The following year he became a professor at the University of Paris-Nanterre . Since 1990 he has been a professor at the Pierre and Marie Curie University.

Birgé works in the field of mathematical statistics. He conducts research on nonparametric estimations, especially on the theory of model selection and adaptation. He is also interested in dimensional theory , the relationship between estimation and tests, and statistical inequalities.

In 2005 he received the Brouwer Medal of the Koninklijk Wiskundig Genootschap for the "depth, originality and elegance of his work in the field of mathematical statistics". He is also an Honored Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics . In 2012 Birgé was awarded the Sophie Germain Prize .
